Need no salary or benefit; Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala's praiseworthy decision

It is a joke that often aligns with reality: Honest officials within the police force are more likely to receive stones than rose petals. Former DGP A Hemachandran was one such capable IPS officer who completed his long career without bringing any infamy.

Despite excelling in all the posts assigned to him, the previous government did not allow him to become the police chief responsible for maintaining law and order. The decision was made since it was known that Hemachandran would not bend according to the whims of the ruling elite. This resulted in a loss for the Kerala police force. Moreover, his services, which were involved in police reform efforts at the national level and in Kerala, were not utilised by the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government. At the same time, the government did not forget to give laurels to controversial figures in the police force after they retired.

Considering all this, it is a relief that Ramesh Chennithala decided to appoint Hemachandran, whom the society looks up to with respect, as his advisor is of special importance. The message is clear. The home ministry envisions the next five years of ideal management without any serious lapse in law and order. With Hemachandran's experience and a clean image as an advisor, many innovative ideas can be implemented in accordance with the public interest. Hemachandran had worked with Ramesh when he was the Home Minister in the Oommen Chandy cabinet.

Hemachandran, who said yes to the offer, did not accept any salary or benefits. A commendable example. This approach is what sets him apart from others. Not many would have the cojones to say ‘NO’ to their superiors, but Hemachandran is different. He won’t hesitate to call out a wrong but remains humble throughout. Communication will be forthright, and there will be no smokescreen to implement any ulterior motives.

The police actions during the last government were deplorable and unscrupulous. The bias shown by the police was clear as day; they often adopted a rogue attitude to settle scores. Therefore, it goes without saying that Ramesh's responsibility is heavy to upend things.

In the introduction to his latest book, 'The Path of Power and Injustice', Hemachandran writes: “The incidents described in the book are contrary to the principles of democratic governance. The law stands still in the face of the politically and economically influential female oppressor. The man who is denied justice stands helpless when the law favours the accused. The police officer who acts honestly becomes a victim of retaliatory measures by the powers that be. After knowing the unpleasant truths, I am no longer able to take pride in hearing the mention of Kerala police.”
