We recently published an alarming report regarding the rising number of deaths in the state, where people were found suddenly collapsing to the ground. A major cause for concern is that such sudden deaths—previously reported primarily among the elderly or those with pre-existing heart conditions—are now increasingly occurring in individuals under the age of fifty-five. It is particularly noteworthy that these incidents are happening even among seemingly healthy individuals, occurring at a time when the general public is becoming increasingly conscious of health, exercise regimens, and overall well-being.
The practice of engaging in strenuous exercise at gyms and fitness centres—without expert guidance is a serious issue that can invite grave danger.
Not just poor diet, high cholesterol, hypertension, and diabetes. Excessive mental stress, the overconsumption of junk food, and strenuous workout routines performed without expert guidance or scientific backing in many gyms may be paving the way for sudden cardiac arrest on an unprecedented scale. Undertaking strenuous exercise without regard for one's age, health status, or underlying medical conditions may be a risk not worth taking.
Furthermore, there have been no scientific assessments or studies regarding the health implications of the exercise regimens prescribed at the workout centres that have proliferated in both urban and rural areas since the COVID-19 pandemic. While the majority of these centres operate under the supervision and guidance of expert trainers, many others are out in the business where the equipment may be present but the expert trainer.
Youngsters collapsing to death all of a sudden have been reported multiple times in the post-COVID era. COVID-19 primarily impacted lung function, which naturally affects heart health as well. When this factor is combined with changes in dietary habits and the excessive stress associated with modern work environments, unexpected deaths—even among those yet to reach middle age—have ceased to be rare occurrences. Since contemporary work environments are often stressful, it is essential to find time for leisure and relaxation. Practising simple breathing exercises can help not only to improve lung health but also to alleviate mental stress. Health experts also suggest—and it is worth trying—dedicating some time to activities like gardening, small-scale farming, or caring for pets when stressful situations cannot be avoided.
Excessive reliance on body fitness centres to relieve stress is likely to bring more bad than good. Workout centres are part of a changing health culture; consequently, even middle-aged individuals often seek their services without expert guidance. While exercise is undoubtedly beneficial, it must be scientifically grounded and tailored to each individual's health needs. The government should consider conducting a thorough study on this matter, establishing age-appropriate guidelines and restrictions for gym exercises, and implementing a supervisory mechanism if necessary. Even as medical treatments advance and healthcare facilities expand, it is essential to simultaneously foster proper health awareness within the general public.
