Rs 10 cow cess per bottle of liquor; Himachal Pradesh govt aiming to earn Rs 100 crore a year: amount to be spent on welfare of cows

SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh government has imposed cow cess on the sale of liquor. During the budget presentation, the government announced that Rs 10 cow cess would be levied on the sale of a bottle of liquor. Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu said that through this, annual revenue of Rs 100 crore can be generated. This amount will be spent on improving the comfort of the cows.

The Himachal government's budget also includes a subsidy of Rs 25,000 each for the purchase of scooters for students and the announcement of various schemes in the education sector. There is also a plan to provide loans to farmers at 2 percent interest.


Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh government had imposed a 0.5 percent cess for building shelters for cows. The Congress government in Rajasthan has similarly introduced cow cess. During the period from 2019 to 2022, the Rajasthan government has collected Rs 2176 crore through cow cess, but of this, only Rs 5.20 crore has been spent so far.
