SC upholds order to remove mosque on High Court premises; further action within 3 months

allahabad-high-court-

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court upheld the order to remove the mosque located in the Allahabad High Court premises. The court also said that if the mosque is not removed within three months, the state government and the High Court can take further steps.

In 2017, the Allahabad High Court had ordered the demolition of the mosque in the court premises. The Supreme Court rejected the petitions filed by Waqf Masjid and UP Sunni Central Waqf Board against this. The Supreme Court allowed the petitioners to demand another piece of land from the state government in lieu of removing the mosque. The bench issued this order on the ground that the mosque is situated on government land and the grant was canceled in 2002. The court directed the state government to take further action based on the law.
