KOZHIKODE: The Koolimad bridge over the Chaliyar river connecting Kozhikode and Malappuram districts collapsed during construction. The concrete beams of the bridge collapsed around 9 am. Public Works Minister Muhammad Riyas has ordered an inquiry into the incident. The Public Works Vigilance Division will investigate the incident.
The Uralungal Labor Society said that the machine, which was used to fasten the beam, got damaged and this led to the accident. The concrete beam fell off while being attached to the bridge. One of the three collapsed concrete beams completely fell into the river. The other two beams hung on the bridge itself. One worker was injured in the accident.
The construction of this bridge across the Chaliyar river started in 2019. Construction was halted for a long time after construction materials were washed away in the floods of that year.
