Eight die in Kollam accidents


KOLLAM: Eight people including women and children died on Saturday in two separate accidents in Ayoor and Oyoor, which is 10 km away.

The first accident was at near Maruthamanpally Cashewnut factory at Oyoor took the life of two youths. The bike on which they were travelling in the midnight hit a post and they were thrown off to the road. Both, were seen lying in a pool of blood in the morning by the locals. Though they were rushed to hospital by the police, their life could not be saved.

In the noon at around 1, an alto car rammed into a KSRTC bus at Ayoor, killing five member of a family including women and children and the driver.

Four bus passengers also got injured.

The dead have been identified as Ranni Vadasserikkara native Mini (45), daughter Anjana (20), sisister-in-law Smitha (27), Smitha’s children Abhinoj (8), Harsha (3.5) and car driver Arub (21). They were returning after darshan at Karikkakom Sree Chamundeshwari temple.

The bus was heading towards Thiruvananthapuram. The car tried to overtake a tipper lorry and ended up ramming the front side of the bus. The front side of the car had completely gone under the bus, which dragged it for about 200 meters.

The first rescue work was done by nearby workshop and hotel staff. Later police and fire force reached the spot. Though they broke open the car and took out the people inside, all except Abhinoj and Anjana were dead. The two were taken to hospital but were declared brought dead.

The bodies of Mini, Smitha, Arun and Harsha are kept in Kadakkal Taluk hospital and those of Anjana and Abhonoj are kept in Medical College mortuary.

Mini’s husband is working in a Gulf country and Manoj is Smitha’s husband. Chadayamangalam police have filed a case.
