Extreme rainfall in Kerala, orange alert in five districts, rain warning in 11 districts on Friday

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rains and winds in the state till November 29. Extreme levels of rainfall are expected in the state today as a result of low pressure. Following this, orange alert was declared in five districts. The orange alert has been issued in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki districts. All districts except Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod will receive heavy rainfall.

Yellow alert has been declared in Wayanad, Thrissur, Palakkad, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad districts on Friday.

The Met office has warned of heavy rains in all the districts except Kannur and Kasaragod on Saturday. Yellow alert has been declared in Wayanad, Thrissur, Palakkad, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad districts.

The state is expected to receive 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain in 24 hours in the districts where the yellow alert has been issued. The IMD has issued a yellow alert in some districts, but warns of caution similar to the orange alert in hilly areas which have received heavy rains in recent days as isolated thundershowers are likely in the hilly areas. The IMD has warned fishermen not to go fishing off the coast of Kerala's Lakshadweep on Saturday. The Met office has warned of strong wings in Kerala, Lakshadweep, Maldives coasts that could reach 40 to 50 km per hour and sometimes up to 60 km/h.
