MALAPPURAM: The stones, which were laid in Tirur for the SilverLine project, have submerged under water even before heavy rains. According to locals, this is a warning of the problems that could arise if the project passes through ecologically fragile zones. The stones, which were laid in the low-lying areas near the railway track in Vengaloor near Tirur, submerged even before rains intensified in the area.

Three-quarters of the one meter-long stone have sunk amid mild showers. During the monsoons, water levels will go up to about 1.5 metres. The locals are worried that the populated areas may get flooded if the project is implemented. The water levels in the area had gone up dangerously during the heavy rains, last year. The area has also witnessed huge protests against the project.
