Shutters of Mullaperiyar dam opened; Idukki dam will also be opened, no need to worry, says Minister K Rajan

IDUKKI: The shutters of the Mullaperiyar dam have been opened. Two shutters of the spillway were raised. The third and fourth shutters opened at 8 am. 772 cubic feet of water were released per second.

The maximum storage capacity of Mullaperiyar is 142 feet. The authorities have asked to be vigilant along the Periyar coast and in Cheruthoni. Revenue Minister K Rajan said there was no cause for concern at present.

The Idukki dam will open at 10 am. A shutter at Cheruthoni will raise 40 cm. It will release 40,000 litres of water per second. Minister Roshy Augustine said all precautionary measures have been taken.
