THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Schools will not reopen on June 1 in the wake of Covid surge. Online classes will be continued. If Covid transmission slows down, the Department of Education estimates that the decision on school reopening could be taken after May 25.

It is also not clear when the deferred practical examination for ten and plus two students will be held. The evaluation of both the exams could not be started. Prolonged evaluation will further affect the opening of the school. It is up to the teachers to evaluate.

Schools have been closed for more than a year. Classes to clear doubts were conducted at the end of this academic year only for 10th and Plus Two students. Children up to ninth grade studied online at home. All of them will be promoted to the next classes. Classes are likely to continue online until September of the new academic year.

Test positivity rate has crossed 25.69 as the Covid's second wave has intensified. Teachers and parents are asking how to think about opening a school in this situation. Safety can only be ensured after children has been vaccinated with both doses. No decision has been taken on admiting new students to Class 1.
