TN reduces tunnel discharge from Mullaperiyar to raise water level to 142 ft

IDUKKI: Tamil Nadu has again reduced the amount of water being carried from the Mullaperiyar dam. According to the current rule curve, water can be stored up to 142 feet. Tamil Nadu has reduced the amount of water being carried as part of raising the water level of the dam to 142 feet.

Tamil Nadu currently carries only 950 cubic feet of water per second from the Mullaperiyar.

A shutter on the spillway was lowered to ten centimeters, educing the amount of water carried. Earlier this shutter was raised to 30 cm. As per the existing rule curve, Tamil Nadu can store up to 142 feet of permitted capacity in Mullaperiyar from tomorrow.

Earlier, protests led by various organizations in Tamil Nadu had erupted against the opening of the spillway shutters before the water level reached 142 feet. At the same time, the water level in the Idukki Dam began to fall. The current water level in Idukki is 2400.46 feet.
