THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPM state secretary M.V. Govindan has stated that MLA Mukesh, who is currently facing sexual harassment allegations, need not resign from his position. In a press conference, Govindan emphasized that none of the MLAs or MPs who have faced similar allegations across the country have stepped down from their posts. He noted that Mukesh would, however, be removed from the film policy-making committee.

Govindan pointed out that 16 MPs and 135 MLAs in India are currently accused of crimes against women, with the BJP accounting for 54 of these cases, the Congress for 23, the TDP for 17 and the Aam Aadmi Party for 13. Despite the serious nature of these allegations, none of these legislators have resigned. He added that two MLAs in Kerala are currently facing such allegations, with one already in jail. Citing past cases, Govindan mentioned political figures like Oommen Chandy, Kunjalikutty, Anilkumar, Hibi Eden, Peetambara Kurup and Shashi Tharoor, all of whom faced allegations but did not resign from their respective posts.

Govindan further argued that there is no legal provision to reinstate a legislator who resigns under allegations but is later found innocent, suggesting that forcing a resignation could result in an injustice. He reiterated that while the party does not believe Mukesh should resign as an MLA, it is committed to ensuring an independent and impartial investigation, with no interference from Mukesh in the process.
