THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The term of the search committee for the appointment of Kerala University VC has been extended for another three months. The Raj Bhavan issued the new notification just as the tenure of the current committee was about to end today. The Kerala University Senate has not yet appointed representatives to the search committee as per the Governor's instructions. The current committee only consists of representatives of the Chancellor and the UGC.
The government had started legislation to remove the Governor from the position of Chancellor of state universities. Although the bill was passed by the state assembly, the Governor has not yet signed it. The term of the Vice Chancellor of Kerala University came to an end amidst this. The search committee was formed to appoint the new VC as per UGC rules. A three-member search committee can be constituted only with representatives of the UGC, the Chancellor and the Senate. The High Court had pointed out that the notification issued by the Governor, including only two members without a Senate representative, was provisional and not erroneous in its action.
