Youth in Kollengode kills self after losing lakhs in online rummy; used entire salary to play rummy, beaten for questioning, says wife

PALAKKAD: Vaisakha, wife of a youth, who committed suicide in Kollengode, said that he took the extreme step following financial liability of lakhs due to online rummy. She said that her husband Gireesh had sold and pledged her gold of 25 sovereigns to play rummy. She said that he used to torture her for money.

Gireesh started playing rummy to pass time when he was alone at home during Covid time. He continued with that. He used his full salary to play rummy after addicted to it. When he found that his money was not enough, he started selling his wife’s gold. In the meantime, he started taking liquor. His debt increased. Though he threatened to commit suicide many times, she did not take it seriously. Despite several requests to stop the rummy game, Girish did not give in and started torturing her also. Vaisakha said he committed suicide when he was unable to bear his debt. With Girish's death, Vaisakha has no idea how to move forward with her children.
