Floating wind turbines to generate electricity in Vizhinjam, first such project in India

wind-turbine

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For the first time in the country, Vizhinjam is implementing a project to generate electricity by setting up a wind farm in the sea. These floating fields will not be far away from the sea. A power plant will be installed at the harbor and cables will be laid under the sea. The initial target is to produce 400 kW of electricity. If successful, it will be furtherv developed.

The project is carried out by ANERT in collaboration Norwegian company Worldwide Wind. After receiving the approval from the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the two organizations signed the MoU. Wind turbans will have to be made in a special design. It will be designed by a Norwegian company and the outline will be done by ANERT. Electricity is produced in this way in many places, including the United States.

Why Vizhinjam?

1. Huge waves and strong winds. The blades turn faster resulting in more production of electricity

2. Winds will become stronger in the evening. That's when more electricity is needed

3.With the arrival of international port, electricity can be used without transmission loss

2.23 percent green power
The goal is to switch to completely green electricity by 2040. At present only 70.28 MW of wind power is generated, which is only 2.23 percent of total electricity.

Including solar power, 3145 MW of green power is generatied in Kerala
