KOHIMA: Hekani Jakhalu creates history by becoming the first woman MLA in Nagaland after 60 years since it attained statehood. Hekani (48) won from Dimapur-III seat from BJP’s ally NDPP. She is a lawyer and a social activist. She was among four women of the 183 candidates who contested the Nagaland assembly elections.
Hekani won after defeating Lok Janshakti Party's Azheto Zhimomi. Another woman candidate Salhoutuonuo Kruse, also from the NDPP, is leading in Western Angami seat.
The BJP-NDPP alliance is set to retain power in Nagaland. NDPP is leading in 39 seats in the polls held in 60 constituencies. Have already won three seats. The NPF (Naga People’s Front) who got 26 seats last time, is leading only in one seat. The congress has failed miserably not even able to lead in a single seat.
