No absolute majority in Meghalaya; chances are likely for NPP-BJP alliance

dd

SHILLONG: No one has managed to get a clear majority in Meghalaya as the counting of votes continues. Conard Sangma’s NPP has become the single largest party with 26 seats. However, they need to win five more seats to form the government. In this situation, NPP may explore the possibility of alliance with other parties.

It was earlier estimated that NPP may form an alliance with BJP again if a situation arises where they won’t get majority. But things have changed in Meghalaya after the United Democratic Party (UDP), a regional party, made an unexpected breakthrough by overtaking the BJP. With this, the possibility of NPP forming an alliance with its former ally UDP has also increased.

Trinamool Congress, which made an unexpected breakthrough, could not maintain its initial lead. In the 2018 elections, Congress won 21 seats and NPP 20 seats. BJP had two seats then. The BJP had claimed to win 10-15 seats in the state. Voting in Meghalaya was held on February 27. 85.17% people had cast their votes.
