Controversial goal from Chhetri help Bengaluru reach semifinals of ISL, Kerala Blasters forfeit match

BENGALURU: In a match marred by a controversial goal, Bengaluru FC advanced to the semi-finals of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2022-23 after a 1-0 victory over Kerala Blasters FC. The Kerala side forfeited the match in the first half of extra time following the controversial free-kick goal by Sunil Chhetri. Chhetri scored the only goal of the match in the 97th minute of the match.

KBFC kept the ball for most of the time in the first half but couldn’t get past Bengaluru goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. The Bengaluru side played on the counter and created solid chances early in the match. The Kerala side started on the high in the second half but failed to find the back of the net. The sides were level at the end of 90 minutes as the match went into extra time. In the first minute of extra time, Rahul KP tried a shot from range after a flick from Luna but it went inches wide at the far post.

Bengaluru FC responded at the other end through a corner as Bruno Ramires tried to head the ball towards goal but it over the bar.

In the seventh minute of extra time, Chhetri took a quick free-kick which flew into the back of the net. It was clear that the Blasters players weren't ready but the referee allowed the goal. KBFC forfeited the match in disagreement with the decision and a win was awarded to Bengaluru FC. Bengaluru FC advanced to the next stage of the ISL playoffs and will take on League Shield Winners Mumbai City FC next in a two-legged semi-final on March 7 and 12.
