KOZHIKODE: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a strike after a doctor was beaten up by a patient's relatives at Fatima Hospital. Doctors of all hospitals in Kozhikode district will go on strike tomorrow as a mark of protest. The strike is from 6 am to 6 pm. But the emergency department and labor room were excluded from the strike.
The strike is being held demanding action against those who attacked the doctor. The IMA also alleged that there was an attempt to kill the doctor. The incident shocked the medical community and the public. Exemplary action should be taken against the culprits. The IMA has also warned that if such nefarious activities continue, they will stage a strike by stopping treatment in Kerala.
Health Minister Veena George said that action would be taken against such people, but it did not happen. Those who attacked left with the police watching. Attacks on hospitals are at the rate of five in a month. The officials of IMA Kozhikode also demand that the Hospital Protection Act be amended and strengthened.
Cardiologist PK Ashokan of Kozhikode Hospital was assaulted. A week ago, the baby of a woman from Kunnamangalam died during childbirth at Fatima Hospital. The woman was undergoing treatment due to other health problems. An argument related to the delay in their CT scan result resulted in the attack. Anita, a gynecologist, treated the young woman. The hospital authorities clarified that the angry relatives of the woman attacked Anita's husband, Dr. Ashokan, who was there. Ashokan has been admitted to the emergency room with facial injuries.
