GANDHINAGAR: The court sentenced the accused to death in the case of stabbing a minor girl to death while trying to rape her by breaking into her house. The Rajkot court in Gujarat sentenced the 26-year-old to death. The brutal murder took place in March 2021. The girl, a Plus One student, was brutally murdered by Jayesh Sarvaiya, a resident of Jetalsar village. Additional District and Sessions Judge RR Chaudhary pronounced the sentence.
The incident took place on March 16, 2021. The accused who is a neighbor, was constantly harassing the girl. Jayesh reached her home when she was alone. He broke into the house and demanded her to have sex with him. But the girl refused. With this, the accused groped the girl and tried to rape her. But the girl pushed him away and screamed loudly. So, the man stabbed the girl to death with the knife in his hand. The accused stabbed the minor girl 34 times. The incident was first seen by local residents who came running after hearing the girl’s scream. Later, the accused was arrested by the police. There was a huge protest demanding death penalty for the murder. A hartal was also held in the area. After that, the police accelerated the procedures.
The police registered a case under POCSO act. At the end of the trial, the court sentenced the accused to death. Special Public Prosecutor Janak Patel said that according to the definition given by the Supreme Court in the Nirbhaya case, the court determines this as a rare case. He said that the court is considering it as a serious incident, and has given one month time to the accused to file an appeal.
