KOZHIKODE: The Muslim League is relieved to have been able to elect the state committee and general secretary after making some concessions and inclusions, while one section attempted to use a pressure strategy leading up to the polls. When the state council met in Kozhikode yesterday, the leaders and councillors were anxious about whether there would be competition for the post of general secretary. However, the subsequent consultations and strategies and inclusions brought things to a consensus.
The number of state secretariat members, which was initially 31, was increased to 37 at the end of the discussion. Although five permanent invitees were fixed, it was later increased to seven.
While PK Kunhalikutty and others stood for PMA Salam, the emerging alternative faction in the party supported MK Muneer. Till the other day, the Muneer faction had hinted that Muneer will contest.
PMA Salam had once contested as an LDF candidate and had captured the League's seat. The growth of Salam after he came to the Muslim League has been rapid. The other faction believes that PK Kunhalikutty is behind this. Salam's anti-League speeches were widely circulated on social media.
Many in the League were concerned that if a competition takes place, it would be considered as the failure of Sadiq Ali Thangal's leadership. Moves were made for Salam focusing on this issue.
