As per the information his family received, while fishing from the ship he slipped and fell into the sea after a strong wave. A life ring was thrown to him and Vinod Lokhande, a colleague, jumped into the sea with a rope to save Akhil, but the undercurrent and eddies were too strong to rescue him. His colleague Vinod also went missing, but he was rescued by the Coast Guard. It is said that the rescue operation could not be carried out for three days and the search was started again last day. The family is hoping that he may have escaped on another ship or reached another port.
