Arikomban mission prolonged; residents call for hartal in Idukki tomorrow

arikomban-

IDUKKI: Residents call for a hartal tomorrow in 13 panchayats in Idukki. The people's protest came after the court put a stay on the 'Arikomban Mission'. The people said that they will not back down from their demand to capture Arikomban. Chinnakal road was blocked by the protesters and there is a strong protest by locals in Idukki Sinkukandam. MP Dean Kuriakos responded that the decision of the High Court in the Arikomban issue is completely disappointing.

The High Court informed today that it is not possible to consider the capture and caging of Arikomban now. The court asked the forest department officials if there were any other options available in the case of Arikomban. The court has informed that a five-member expert committee can take a decision on the matter. The court observed that the permanent solution would be to relocate the residents of the 301 colony who are suffering due to the activities of Arikomban. The court also asked how the tribals were relocated to the habitat of the elephant in the first place.

The Forest Department also pointed out that the permanent solution would be to relocate the residents in the 301 colony. However, the immediate action to be taken in case of attack by Arikomban is to capture and cage him, the forest department argued. The forest department had informed the court that capturing, radio-collaring, and then shifting the elephant into the forest or monitoring the movement of the elephant by attaching a GSM collar and leaving it where it is now are not practical options.
