KOCHI: Malayalee nurse Nimisha Priya is awaiting a death sentence in the case of killing Talal Abdo Mahdi, a Yemeni national. If the process of giving blood money to Talal's relatives for the release of Nimisha Priya is not completed soon, the situation may get out of hand. The Supreme Court of Yemen, which is considering the appeal of Nimisha Priya, has decided to speed up the proceedings. The criminal prosecution team has asked for the documents to be produced immediately. It should be submitted along with the statement of Talal's close relatives that they are ready to forgive.

Talal's relatives should be paid Rs.1.5 crore for the release of Nimisha Priya, a native of Palakkad Kollangode. An organization called Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council is on the scene to collect this money. Senior advocate KL Balachandran, who is handling Nimisha's case, said that the intervention of central and state governments is necessary to overcome the legal hurdles in collecting funds from various countries and bringing them to Yemen.

New disputes

Delay in giving blood money is leading to new problems. It is indicated that two of Talal's close relatives have expressed their opposition to the pardon. Adv Balachandran says that the intervention of the Centre will be needed to solve this problem.

The case is as follows

Nimisha, who was a nurse in Yemen, sought Talal's help to start her own clinic. Nimisha's questioning of Talal's extortion of money from the clinic led to hostilities. Talal then forged documents of marriage to Nimisha and brutally tortured her. Her passport was stolen and she was not allowed to return home. The case alleges that on July 25, 2017, Talal was sedated and killed by Nimisha. The body was cut into several pieces and put in plastic bags which were placed in a water tank with the help of a nurse named Hanan who worked with her. The trial court gave a death sentence to Nimisha. The appeal is pending before the Supreme Court.
