IDUKKI: It took hours to take out the driver's hand which got stuck between the gears of the tractor gearbox. The incident happened at 7:30 am Tuesday morning at Kaliyar in Thodupuzha. The hand of Rajaram (53), a native of Theni, got stuck in the vehicle.

His hand got stuck when he lifted the top off the gearbox to repair the vehicle which allows it to operate in double gears. Rajaram had repaired gearboxes earlier also. The driver's assistant and the locals tried to rescue him, but failed. The Kaliyar Police then informed the Thodupuzha Fire Rescue Service.

Soon the fire force reached the spot. The medical team also reached the spot by this time and gave him first aid. Rajaram's hand was taken out after cutting the gear shifting shaft with the help of tractor mechanics using fire brigade's hydraulic spreader and torch cutter. Rajaram was immediately admitted to Thodupuzha Government Hospital.
