PALAKKAD/OTTAPALAM: A woman ASI of Malappuram Valanchery police station has been arrested for allegedly extorting Rs 10.25 lakh and 93 sovereign gold ornaments from two persons. Aryasree (47), a native of Vallapuzha's Churakode, was called to Ottapalam police station and arrested. Malappuram district police chief suspended them pending investigation.

As per a complaint, 93 sovereign gold and Rs 1.5 lakh were extorted from a native of Pazhayannur who was a classmate in the college and Rs 8.75 lakh from a native of Ottapalam's Kanniyampuram. The police said that Aryasree cheated the Kanniyampuram native who was an engineer abroad by promising that if he invested Rs.5 lakh, she would pay Rs.25,000 per month and that she would return the entire investment whenever he wanted.

She took 93 sovereign jewellery from a native of Pazhayannur who had taken a loan from a financial institution to build a house. She promised to pay off the home loan and after that she would return the jewellery. She took Rs 50,000 in the name of paying the Malappuram police society, Rs 50,000 for her husband to go abroad and Rs 50,000 to repair the leaky house of her driver. Those who lost their money and gold approached the police when Aryasree did not comply with the assurances.

Aryasree was arrested when Ottapalam Inspector M Sujith's investigation found that the complaint had merit. The case is under the sections of breach of trust and fraud. Aryasree was produced in the court and remanded. She had bought gold from a jeweler in Pattambi's Koppam by giving a check of Rs 15 lakh. After the cheque bounced, a complaint was lodged with the Koppam police regarding this.

Denial, confession

Aryasree reached the station without any fear or hesitation. She came in uniform and saluted before the inspector. The answers to the questions about the fraud were initially as if she didn't know anything. When the investigation team presented the evidence, the accused confessed to the crime.
