KOLKATA: A woman who tried to smuggle 27 gold bars from Bangladesh to India was arrested. The arrest was made by the Border Security Force (BSF) in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district on Thursday. The seized gold bars weigh more than two kilos. These will cost around Rs 1.29 crore.
The arrested has been identified as Manika Dhar (34), a native of Chittagong, Bangladesh. She had 27 gold bars wrapped in cloth and tied around their waists.
BSF had received a tip-off about the smuggling of gold from Bangladesh. The women soldiers found the gold hidden in Manika's clothes in a subsequent probe. During interrogation, the woman said that she brought the gold bars to give to an unknown person in Barasa, West Bengal. She also admitted that she received Rs. 2000 for this. The woman and the seized gold bars were handed over to the Customs office for further action. A BSF spokesperson hailed the vigilance of the soldiers.
