TANUR: At least 23 people, including women and infants, died after a boat capsized in Ottumpuram's Thoovaltheeram beach in Malappuram's Tanur. The death toll is likely to increase. The tragedy that rocked the state took place on Sunday around 7pm at the place where the river and the sea meet. This disaster is a case of brutal negligence in tourism sector.
The deceased has been identified as Asna (18) and Sahla(7), the children of Syedalavi, a native of Parappanangady, Tanur Olapeedika native Siddique(35), his children Fatimah Minha (12) and Faizan (3) Jelsiya Jabir (40), Perinthalmanna Pattikad native Anshid (10), paternal uncle's daughter Aflah (7) and Seenath from Parappanangady's Kunnummal ( 38), her relative Jaleer (9), Raseena from Parappanangadi. The boat started its journey around 6.50 pm with more than twice as many people as possible. The boat capsized after moving 400 m ahead.
People on top floor of the boat were mostly rescued. There were only two doors on the boat. There were many children on the boat which made the disaster worse. As per reports, there were about 25 people in the lower level. It took two and a half hours to bring the boat to the shore.
As it was a holiday, many people visited the beach. Though the fishermen folk and locals initiated rescue operations, lack of light made it difficult. The injured were taken to Tirur District Hospital, Tirurrangadi taluk hospital, private hospitals in Parappanangadi and Tanur. Those who were in serious condition were taken to Kozhikode and Manjeri Medical Colleges.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia to the kin of the deceased.
