KOTTAYAM: The ambulance carrying the body of Vandana Das passed the entrance of the medical college for the post-morte m through hundreds of medical students who had taken to the streets in protest against the murder in the scorching sun. Vandana's father, Mohandas, and mother, Vasantha Kumari, were in the ambulance carrying her body from KIMS Hospital.
The daughter, who fulfilled her parents' wish of becoming a doctor, was consoled by the relatives, who were both devastated by the fact that she was killed amidst her job. After receiving a call from the hospital that their daughter had an accident, the parents locked the house and went to KIMS Hospital Wednesday morning at 6.30 am. Post-mortem proceedings started at 12:30 noon. Except for a few close relatives, everyone else returned home to make arrangements for her funeral rites.
Some relatives who were standing in front of the mortuary sobbed and said that she wanted to become a gynaecologist. She was a simple girl who treated her relatives and locals very lovingly. They said that she became a doctor through hard work.
Meanwhile, a demonstration was held in front of the mortuary under the leadership of the Kerala House Surgeons Association. More police forces were deployed on the spot while they were chanting slogans like 'Shame on you, Veena George.., can't die like this, we need justice, we need justice'. The gate to the mortuary was locked.
'We are there to protect lives, who is there to protect us...', the march led by the RCC PG Association erupted into protest by the students. With that, the police completely closed the road in front of the morgue.
The body was brought out after the post-mortem at 2:30 pm. Many people, including medical students and doctors, paid their last respects to the body, kept in front of the mortuary for the public to pay homage for half an hour. Minister V N Vasavan, former ministers V M Sudheeran and V S Sivakumar were also present. It was after 3 pm the ambulance carrying Vandana's body returned to Kottayam leaving everyone in tears.
