Merchant allegedly beaten up by CPI workers in T'puram for not paying donation amount as per their demand

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A Tamil Nadu man, who runs a business in Pothencode for not contributing an amount demanded by CPI workers as donation. The said merchant, Mariyappan, was beaten up by the CPI workers who was crowdfunding for the renovation of the MN memorial. Pothencode police have registered a case in the incident.

The incident mentioned in the complaint took place last Friday. The CPI workers, who had come to collect money for the MN Memorial renovation fund, gave a coupon of Rs 500 at Mari Lakshmi Sweets, Mariyappan's shop at Pothencode Junction, and demanded money. Mariyappan told the workers that he cannot pay no more than Rs 50. He was beaten after this.

In the complaint lodged yesterday, it is alleged that Shukoor, the regional general secretary of the AITUC, hit Mariyappan on both cheeks. The complaint also says that he was abused and the goods in the shop were thrown. Mariyappan, who has been running a shop in Pothencode for 50 years, sought treatment at the hospital after being assaulted. Then he complained to the police. Pothencode police have recorded his statement.
