ALAPPUZHA: The food and safety department looks to start up inspections into hotels after doubts propound about the material used for packing food. It has come to notice the cheap quality plastics used for wrapping edible, even in famous hotels. The hot served food laced into the plastic will eventually melt the synthetic to effuse it with the food, which can result in death.
The government has banned the usage of plastics with 50 microns or less. Albeit the rule, many eateries still prefer cheap quality plastics aiming lucrative business. Such plastics emit a malodorous essence which when mixed with food will give formation to dangerous chemicals. The food gone inside can easily harm the internal organs and can choke the person to death in hours' time.
The department will soon check the aluminum foil papers, plastic containers, plastic glass, and especially the packet used to wrap biryani which is the most sold dish in Kerala.
The samples of such plastics found in hotels will be acquired in the coming days. The testing of the samples will be conducted at the Mysore Central food technological research institute. If found having the presence of such dangerous chemicals, the hotel owners will be charged and may serve imprisonment.
