KOCHI: The Kerala High Court is gearing up to review the sentences awarded in two cases that created a stir in the state. The court will be reviewing the death sentences awarded in the Jisha murder case and the Attingal double murder case. The high court has ordered a mitigation investigation for this. The court will examine the culprits' socio-economic status, mental status and the torture they faced.
The court has directed the Prisons Department to submit a report regarding the character of the culprits in both cases. The court will take a decision on the death sentence based on this report. This is the first time the Kerala High Court is ordering a mitigation investigation. The court issued the order on the Supreme Court guideline that other backgrounds of the accused must also be considered. The lawyers of the culprits had demanded this in the court.
While the Attingal double murder took place in 2014, the murder of Jisha took place in 2016. The high court division bench comprising Justice Alexander Thomas and Justice C Jayachandran issued the order in order to commute the death penalty of the accused in these cases.
