NEW DELHI: There is a move to expel cops who are obese. The Assam Police is planning to take such an action. A decision has been taken to record the Body Mass Index (BMI) of all including IPS officers. This is to remove the deadwood (expel people who are no longer useful or productive) from the police force. They will be given three months' time to work on their fitness, and then their BMIs will be recorded.
‘We will give three months’ time to the Assam police and then start BMI assessment in the next fifteen days,’ tweeted Director General of Police G P Singh.
Those having genuine medical grounds like hypothyroidism will be exempted. Singh said that he will be the first to take the BMI on August 15. The Assam police have around 70,000 personnel.
In line with directions of the Hon @CMOfficeAssam , @assampolice Hq has decided to go in for professional recording of Body Mass Index (BMI) of all Assam Police personnel including IPS/APS officers and all DEF/Bn/Organisations.

We plan to give three months time to all Assam…
The report submitted last week said they have drawn up a list of over 650 personnel who are purportedly habitual drinkers or obese, and those among them found unfit for duty will be offered voluntary retirement after a thorough review.
