NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court upheld the Tamil Nadu government's law allowing Jallikattu. A five-member constitution bench headed by Justice K M Joseph pointed that Jallikattu is an integral part of Tamil Nadu's culture and it cannot be decided by the judiciary.
Jallikattu was banned in 2014. The Supreme Court's important order came on the pleas filed by the animal rights organization People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) challenging the law brought by the Tamil Nadu government to overcome this.
The court held that the Tamil Nadu government's law was not unconstitutional. The Supreme Court, which completed the arguments of the organizations and the Tamil Nadu government last December, postponed pronouncing the verdict.
