Rijiju's loss of position

rijiju

Kiren Rijiju was deprived of the post of Law Minister due to his constant criticism of the judiciary while serving as the Union Law Minister. His criticism of the judiciary and the collegium system was transgressive. Rijiju's repeated criticisms had also contributed to a large extent to tarnish the image of the judiciary in the public eye and his comments created divisions within the legal community itself. While the majority of legal scholars opposed the criticism, a minority supported it.

There was also a strong campaign that the opinion of the BJP government ruling the center was coming out through Rijiju. However, the removal of Rijiju from the post of Law Minister also serves to prove that the overall opinion of the BJP government regarding the judiciary is different. The loss of position was not part of a general cabinet reshuffle. Rijiju was transferred from the Law Department to the comparatively less important Ministry of Geography. Satyapal Singh Baghel who is the Minister of State for Law has been transferred to the Ministry of Health. Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, is the new Law Minister. He has been appointed as Minister of State with independent charge. Hence, there will be no more minister of state in this department. Meghwal, who was also an IAS officer from a backward caste, is the main face of BJP in Rajasthan, where elections are due this year. Within 24 hours of his assumption of office, the central government approved the collegium's recommendation to appoint Malayalee and senior lawyer KV Viswanathan and Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice PK Misra as Supreme Court judges.

By removing Rijiju from the post of Law Minister, the Center has sent a clear message that there is no confrontation with the judiciary. Rijiju was constantly saying that the system of appointing judges by the judges themselves does not exist anywhere else in the world and that the people of the country are dissatisfied with the collegium system. He criticized that judges are only responsible for adjudicating cases and when they also appoint judges, the adjudication of cases takes time. The collegium is the existing system, which Parliament can change through legislation. Constantly criticizing the existing system without even bothering to change it serves no purpose other than to garner applause and attention. Recently, the central government has been hit back by the Supreme Court in several cases, including that of the Delhi government. BJP leadership and the Prime Minister decided to replace Rijiju taking all this into account.
