Big SSLC win but sloth-paced educational system

sslc-exams

In 2021, the SSLC win percentage in kerala was 99.47%. In just two years' time, the numbers have traveled up to 99.70%. The record is unprecedented. If such is the pattern, it won't be long until Kerala registers a cent-percent win in SSLC. 4,19,128 students wrote exams this year, and only 1264 failed to pass the hurdle of written tests.

After a halt of two years, the Kerala government introduced back the grace mark system this year which has considerably upped the win percentage among students. Malappuram district, which never tried winning the headlines got all the glitters flowing to their side this time with 11876 students getting full A+ in all subjects. Kannur rose in the ranks with a 99.94% win in SSLC, the best in all of Kerala. Edarikode PKMM school had the most students appearing for SSLC exams in Kerala, a commendable feat nevertheless.

However, the jubilation over SSLC results will soon hit a roadblock when it comes to getting admission for the 11th standard. The system has been practiced religiously in Kerala over the years with no alternative in cards. Even students with good marks find it an uphill battle to get a seat in the favored school. Adding to the worries, the late allotment invariably drags down the dedication of students.

It is reported that almost 3000 teachers evaded the evaluation process. The numbers are unprecedented to date. The delay in results usually extends the admission process for further studies convoluting the whole process. The teachers who distanced themselves from the work had no consideration for the future of students but relished the free time with impunity. The issue should alert the educational department.

Educational minister V Sivankutty expressed belief about starting the 11th standard class on June 5th. Albeit the proclamation, no such schedule chart is prepared and the officials are running helter-skelter to meet the deadline announced. The certificate issuance to the students will also take another two weeks to complete. In this age of technological prowess, our educational system is still moving at a sloth pace which is alarming and embarrassing at the same time.
