THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Transport Minister Antony Raju informed that fines will be imposed from June 5 for violations detected by AI cameras. A decision in this regard was taken at the high-level meet convened by the minister. It was informed earlier that fine will be levied from May 20, but it was extended again. Fines will not be levied if travelled with children below 12 years of age on a two-wheeler till the centre’s decision comes. The decision was taken considering the sentiments of the public. A letter has been sent to the centre for amending the motor vehicle act. The final decision will be taken after getting the reply.

726 AI cameras have been installed all over the state. As the project became controversial, collection of fines was frozen for the time being. However, from May 5, awareness notices were sent. When the trial run was conducted, up to 95,000 violations were detected daily. If the violation is caught by the camera, the vehicle owner will receive a message of the fine to be remitted on his mobile phone. They will also get an e-chellan via post within a week. If the fine is not paid in 30 days, the motor vehicle department will send a notice and take further action. The AI cameras will capture illegal parking, over speeding, use of mobile while driving and more than two on two-wheelers etc.
