IMPHAL: The riots in Manipur have lasted for months, wreaking havoc primarily on women and children. The internet connection was cut off when the riots intensified, so the outside world had little access to information on the horrific spiral of violence in Manipur. Reports of the horrifying violence in the state surfaced after the restoration of internet access to a limited extent.
A video of a BSF jawan sexually assaulting a Manipuri woman inside a shop has now surfaced. The CCTV footage of the jawan insulting the young woman has come out.
Following the release of the incident's footage from last week, the BSF has responded. According to official confirmation, the incident happened on July 20 at a store close to a gas station. According to the BSF, chief constable Satish Prasad is the individual in the video, and he has been suspended awaiting an investigation.
Several tragic incidents including gang-rapes, extortion and murders have been reported in recent days. Reports of other similar incidents followed the release of a video of two young women belonging to the Meiti community being stripped completely naked. Later, news emerged that two Kuki girls were gang-raped by a mob from their workplace and that a young man's head was beheaded and put on display.
In light of these events, the opposition parties in the country had raised the question why law and order maintenance systems including the police are not awake and functioning. Although a case had been registered in the incident where the young women were stripped naked and sexually assaulted, the police made the first arrest only after the video came out. It was only after 77 days that the police took action in the incident.
