NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India has informed the Supreme Court that the Aadhaar number is not mandatory to register as a voter. The commission clarified its position on a public interest petition filed by Telangana Congress leader G Niranjan questioning the law and regulations regarding the linking of voter ID cards and Aadhaar. With this, a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra disposed of the petition.
