Recites Muslim prayer before eating pork; TikTok star sentenced to two years for circulating video

JAKARTA: A woman has been sentenced to two years in jail for reciting a Muslim prayer before consuming pork and for circulating the video of it on TikTok. A fine was also imposed on her. The incident happened in Indonesia. A case was registered against Lina Mukherjee for inciting hatred. She recited the prayer and then ate pork during her visit to Bali. She had circulated the video of it on TikTok.

The verdict was pronounced by the Palembang District Court on the island of Sumatra. The court observed that the statement was made in such a way as to spread hatred against a particular religious group and people following a particular religious belief. A fine of Rs 13,46,929 lakh was imposed in addition to two years sentence. If the fine is not paid, she will have to serve the sentence for another three months. Lina told the media that she knows that she is wrong but did not expect such a harsh punishment and said would move the Supreme Court.
