KOCHI: Noted director and screenwriter K G George passed away Sunday morning. He was 78. He died at the old age home in Kakkanad, Ernakulam. He was under treatment after suffering a stroke.
He was awarded the J C Daniel Award in 2016, government of Kerala's highest honour for contributions to the Malayalam cinema.
He made his debut with Swapnadanam in 1975 which won the national film award for best feature film in Malayalam. Some of his other popular films are Ulkkadal, Mela, Yavanika, Lekhayude Maranam Oru Flashback, Adaminte Vaariyellu, Panchavadi Palam, Irakal and Mattoral. He is a recipient of nine Kerala State Film Awards for his various films. His last movie released in 1998 was Elavamkodu Desam,
George is the founder and chairman of the Malayalam Cine Technicians Association (MACTA). He had served as the chairman of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation.
He leaves behind his wife Selma George, a singer and daughter of singer and actor Pappukutty Bhagavathar. The two got married in February 1977. Actor Mohan Jose is her brother. Arun and Thara are their two children.
He was born to Samuel and Annamma on May 24 in 1945 as their eldest son in Thiruvalla. After graduating in political science from Changanassery NSS College, he completed film directing course from Pune Film Institute. He started his film career assisting noted director Ramu Karyat.
