NEW DELHI: Deaf and mute Malayali lawyer Sara Sunny no longer needs to bring in a sign language interpreter to plead her case in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court itself is arranging for a sign language interpreter.
Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud is the reformer in chief who brought the historic decision. The court will bear the cost of the sign language interpreter. On September 22nd, Sara Sunny argued on her own behalf using a sign language interpreter. The Chief Justice then called for a reform and took the decision. This is the first time that the Supreme Court is fully backing the hearing and speech-impaired lawyers in the country.
Registrar Vivek Saxena accepted the application submitted by Sara Sunny through advocate Sanchita Ain to appoint a sign language interpreter and directed the registry officials to take action.
Sara Sunny (25) is the only deaf and mute lawyer currently practicing in the country. She lives in Bengaluru with her father Sunny Kuruvilla and her mother Betty.
