VARKALA: In Varkala, a prime tourism spot in the district concerns are rising over the escalating use of drugs. The mounting drug consumption among youth poses a substantial challenge to the state government's policy of community-based development and empowerment through responsible tourism. “Sex tourism," "drug tourism" and "cross massaging" are capturing the attention of today's youth. The drug supply remains largely unabated with only occasional apprehensions of drug sellers and users by law enforcement agencies. This has regrettably become a draw for the younger crowd.

Furthermore, there has been a surge in group tourism. The beaches lack adequate lighting providing cover for various activities in the dark hidden from the public eye. Public drinking and the disruption caused by intoxicated groups from South Indian states have become a common sight and they often make a mess at liquor stores. The littering of beer bottles on the streets and disturbances by inebriated people are frequent occurrences yet authorities have failed to take action.

The issue of drug syndicates also looms large in the Edava and Kappil tourism regions. School and college students are being exploited in secluded areas, even coming with their friends while still in uniform. Despite the absence of tourism development efforts, drug sales and usage are rampant. Local residents are demanding more efficient excise operations.

Moreover, drug use is on the rise within major schools in the area. Aayirur and Varkala police stations are dealing with limited manpower and an overload of work. Adequate staffing is urgently needed. With foreign tourists sharing their negative experiences, the number of visitors to the area has significantly declined.
