THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A revised estimate of Rs 3800.93 crore for the Angamaly - Erumeli Sabari route has been approved by the Southern Railway Accounts Department. Now, the wait is for approval from the General Manager of Southern Railway and Railway Board.

An estimate of Rs 3347.35 crore was prepared by K-Rail in February last year. A change was brought into this estimate, which has now got approval from the railway. And now, the state should sign a memorandum of understanding promising to bear half of the project cost (1900.46 crores), for the project to proceed. Back in 2015, the state gave word to the railway about bearing half the cost of the project.

An estimate of Rs 2815 crores was prepared in 2017 but in 2019 the project was frozen by the Railways. The estimate was later revised as per the state government’s request. Rs 1000 crore budget is needed to acquire 274 hectares of land for the project.

Instead of the current project, the survey is progressing for the Chengannur-Pamba 60 km dual carriageway, which will help cover Chengannur to Pamba in 45 minutes. The railway will deliberate the two plans and will give the final decision.

The stations on the current route are Angamaly, Kalady, Perumbavoor, Odakali, Kothamangalam, Muvattupuzha, Vazhakulam, Thodupuzha, Karimkunnam, Ramapuram, Bharanganam, Chemmalamattam, Kanjirappally and Erumeli.

  • The project was announced in 1997

  • Angamali - Kalady 7 km was constructed

  • Rs 264 crores totally spent for the project till now

  • Kalady - Erumeli 109 km to be constructed
