Kerala has high hopes for Malayali ministers

KOCHI: It is hoped that the portfolios given to Suresh Gopi and George Kurian in the Union Cabinet will be beneficial for Kerala. There is a demand that the ministers should intervene to speed up the growth by solving the problems in the fishing and tourism sectors. The Christian churches are also hopeful with George Kurian getting the portfolio of Minority Affairs.

Although there is hope that a Malayali has received the fisheries department formed by the second Modi government, the blue economy policies that give priority to big companies in marine resources are a challenge. Fishing and export sectors should be strengthened by eliminating policies that favour big players such as foreign trawlers. The fishing sector is also demanding a package for those who are in crisis due to the reduced availability of fish due to global warming and El Niño phenomena.

Entrepreneurs are of the opinion that Suresh Gopi can play a huge role in the development of tourism in Kerala. The Centre can speed up infrastructure development in tourism. Kerala can be given more publicity abroad. Officials of Kerala Travel Mart Society said that they will discuss these matters with the minister.

Suresh Gopi's appointment as the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas will help in the completion of large-scale projects initiated in Kochi refinery and related areas, expansion of natural gas supply throughout Kerala and offshore oil exploration.

With George Kurian getting appointed as Minister of State for Minority Affairs, more projects will come to Kerala where the minorities are organized. He is expected to perform well as the Minister of State for Minority Affairs as he has served as a member of the National Minorities Commission.
