NEW YORK: Cup favourites Brazil were eliminated from the prestigious Copa America football competition without even seeing the semifinals. A highly rejuvenated Uruguay squad defeated Brazil in sudden death after the game ended on stalemate after normal time.

Uruguay's Nahitan Nández was sent off for his dangerous tackle on Brazilian prodigy Rodrygo, but the Sambas failed to leverage the chance against a 10-men Uruguay squad. Star player Vinícius Júnior was suspended for the match for his booking received in the previous game.

Real Madrid defender Éder Gabriel Militão failed the target in the penalty shootout for Brazil while Uruguay found the net in four attempts. Uruguay won by 4 goals against 2.

Georgian Daniel de Arrascaeta Benedetti, Federico Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur and Manuel Ugarte were on target for Uruguay in the penalty shootout. Uruguay will face the tournament's most feared squad Colombia in the semifinals. Colombia reached the semi-finals by defeating Panama by 5 goals in the quarter. The semi-final is on Thursday.

Canada also found its way into the semis for the first time in history after defeating Venezuela 4-3 in the penalty shootout. Canada will face Argentina in the semifinals.
