Govt doctor faces probe after demanding bribe to perform surgery

KAYAMKULAM: The health minister has directed an inquiry against gynecologist Dr. Mini Xavier of the Kayamkulam Government Hospital who allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 4,500 for the operation of a poor woman. The director of health department has been asked to immediately submit report on the complaint of Kayamkulam native Majida.

Majida, in her complaint, alleged that Dr. Mini demanded Rs 3,000 for hysterectomy and Rs 1,500 for the anesthesiologist. Suffering from many health problems, Majida lives off the help of the locals. She came to see the doctor two months ago due to bleeding. Her further tests were done at home. She also paid rs 300 to the doctor for each visit. When the operation was scheduled on Friday, the doctor asked to pay another Rs 4,500.
