THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Following the disaster in Amayizhanjan canal, with the intervention of the High Court, the government is taking strict measures for waste disposal in the state.
The decision was taken in an all-party meeting chaired by the Chief Minister yesterday. A campaign called 'Malinyamuktham Navakeralam' will be started. The goal is to declare Kerala completely clean on March 30, 2025, the International Zero Waste Day.
'Malinyamuktham Navakeralam' campaign will start on October 2, on Gandhi Jayanti and will continue till March 30 next year. The opposition parties have said that they will provide full support.
Activities such as waste reduction, proper sorting, treatment of organic waste and liquid waste at source, transfer of inorganic waste material through Haritha Karmasena etc. will be implemented with public participation.
Public vigilance squads will be formed, enforcement measures with the help of the police department will be strengthened and inspections by various agencies related to hygiene and health will be streamlined. AI cameras will be installed at required places.
Collective effort
Necessary plants for toilet waste treatment will be established through collective intervention. Water sources and drains will be purified. Land fills will be started in a scientific manner. Towns with a complete waste management system will address deficiencies in residential areas, parks, markets and public spaces.
Action to prevent violation of law
Strict checks to ensure that banned plastic products are not smuggled into the state. Strict action against manufacturing companies, wholesalers and stockists. Awareness to minimize plastic consumption.
District Level Executive Committee
District, Block, Corporation/Municipality/Gram Panchayat level, Ward/Divisional level implementation committees will be formed for the Malinyamukta Nava Keralam campaign. It will be ensured that there are representatives of political parties, youth, students, women and voluntary organizations in all the committees. Local body level organizing committees and ward level organizing committees should meet fortnightly and evaluate the activities.
