THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Indian Meteorological Department has warned that rain will continue in Kerala for the next few days. There is a possibility of heavy rain at isolated places. There is no chance of heavy or very heavy rains in the state. A yellow alert has been announced in six districts.
Yellow alert has been declared in Kottayam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. The Meteorological Department has also warned that extreme caution should be continued. The warning states that there is a possibility of landslides, flooding and mudslides in areas that have received heavy rains for the past few days and people living on river banks and under dams should be prepared to evacuate.
IMD has informed that people should not enter the water bodies and there is a possibility of high waves along the Kerala coast and a possibility of Kallakadal (swell surge) phenomenon. A low-pressure trough is prevailing from central Kerala to the south Gujarat coast. The monsoon trough is also active. Widespread rains are continuing in Kerala as a result of this.
IMD warns that there is a possibility of heavy rain in various states of the country including Kerala during the months of August-September. The warning states that there is a possibility of favourable conditions for the La Nina phenomenon by the end of this month, which will result in heavy rains. The states including Kerala are looking with fear at the indications that there is a possibility of heavy rain across the country.
Vigilance may be intensified in the hilly areas of the state. The state government will try to make preparations in the wake of the Wayanad Mundakkai and Chooralmala landslides. Agriculture and power generation in the country depend on monsoon rains. However, crop damage and floods are experienced in most states even during normal rains. Hence, many states are looking at the warning of intense rains with fear.
