THODUPUZHA: Upset victory for LDF in Thodupuzha Municipality with the support of Muslim League. After the dispute over the post of chairman in the UDF, the Congress and the Muslim League, the constituent parties, fielded separate candidates leading to the LDF winning the election despite not having an absolute majority. CPM independent Sabina Binchu was elected as the Chairperson.
Out of the 32 councillors present in the poll, Sabina got 14 votes, including five from the League. UDF candidate K Deepak of Congress got 10 votes. The eight-member BJP abstained from the last round of polls. Deepak got the votes of League independent George John and former chairman Saneesh George. The UDF got the vote of CPM independent Merli Raju also.
The 35-member council has 34 members after Mathew Joseph was disqualified under the Anti-Defection Act. CPM member R Hari and CPI member Jose Madathil did not participate in the polling. The CPM leadership informed that Hari did not participate because he was ill.
Cooperation with UDF has ended
The district committee of the Muslim League has announced that it has terminated its cooperation with the UDF in the district for the time being in protest of the violation of etiquette by the Congress front. Congress showed arrogance that they can win the polls even without the League. The leaders said that the League voted for the LDF because Congress tried to win by buying the votes of one member of the Left Front, making two people stay away and influencing the League councillor of the ninth ward.
